We Are Here for You! A message from Centro

Announcement from El Centro Chicano y Latino on the importance of providing a supportive environment where all students can thrive and live as their authentic selves at Stanford.

Dear Comunidad,

At El Centro Chicano y Latino, we believe in the importance of providing a supportive environment where all students can thrive and live as their authentic selves at Stanford.

We recognize that recent events on college campuses across the country are affecting members of our comunidad in various ways.

We write to remind you that we are here for you.

We remain guided by our mission and cultural values to support students as they develop their skills for thoughtful engagement in and with the world, as socially responsible individuals who advocate and dialogue for equity and social justice, within and beyond Latina/o/x/e communities while they are here and long after they leave Stanford.

We also want to remind you of the resources available at El Centro to support your well-being and academic success:

Wellness Services: El Centro works closely with Well-Being at Stanford to help students develop knowledge and life skills to live a healthy, vibrant lifestyle, manage stress, build resilience, and ensure positive interactions. As such, we have weekly office hours with kashi (km) zabaleta hinojosa in our wellness room on Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Kashi’s personal interests include: Neurodiverse Skill Acquisition, Anti-Racist and Anti-Violence Pedagogy, Trauma-Informed and Restorative Justice, Gender and Sexuality Studies, First Generation/Student Education Experience, Student of Color Retention, Disability Justice/Inclusive Pedagogy, Indigeneity,  and Community Wellness. Kashi will be holding a “CurArte:Connecting with the Present Through Creativity” event next week. Please see flyers below for more details.

El Centro also works with the university chaplains to provide support for students seeking spiritual care. Chaplains from the Office of Religious Life are confidential staff trained to employ non-sectarian, non-judgmental listening, support, and accompaniment in spiritual, existential and emotional care. Chaplain Davíd E. Patiño, Chaplain Ken E. Lee, and Chaplain Annanda Barclay hold weekly office hours at El Centro’s wellness room on Tuesdays from 12pm-2pm. See flier below for more details.

Academic Support: Our center, including our lounges and studying conference rooms are open Monday through Friday from 10am - 5pm with staff available to help you find a place to study. Our building is open from 7:30am-1:45am; you are welcome to study, take a break, and be in community in our space until the building closes or instructed otherwise by our cleaning/custodial staff. We offer weekly Study Nights on Sundays from 7pm to 9pm with tutors available for select courses including Math, Physics, Chemistry, CS and spanish-language tutoring. We also collaborate with the Center for Teaching and Learning to promote effective teaching and learning skills.

Community Events: El Centro hosts a variety of community building events ranging from study breaks, to our new bi-weekly Ambiente programming. Our bi-weekly Cafecitos continue to be a wonderful opportunity to take a wellness break in comunidad and enjoy treats and beverages that highlight our diverse cultures and traditions. We think of all of these events collectively as “community care.” This week's Cafecito showcased wonderful drinks and treats from El Salvador.

You can find updates to more programming in our newsletters sent out through email or on our social media pages, including instagram: @elcentrochicanoylatino.

If you have any concerns or needs or just want to provide some feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out in person during business hours or email us at elcentro78@stanford.edu. We are here to support you and ensure that you have access to the resources necessary for your wellness, safety, and success.

With open doors,

El Centro Chicano y Latino
